【Ang Mo Kio #3 - Yummy Western Fried Rice】
Did you know that it was in the 1970s, that the Chinese name for Ang Mo Kio was changed to “宏茂桥“ which means "Bridge of Expansiveness and Prosperity”? Surely such an auspicious name bodes well for the hawkers in this neighbourhood!
China has the earliest record for fried rice from 1,500 years ago. Fried rice is believed to have originated from the Chinese practice of creating a meal with the leftover dishes (and rice) from the previous meal. Our tradition of not wasting food created a whole new genre of Chinese cuisine. Some of the usual ingredients for fried rice are rice, scallion, eggs, and other small bits of meats & vegetables.
In Singapore, we have the Chinese version which comes with side dishes like a fried egg, hot dog sausage, pork cutlet, etc. Nasi Goreng is the Malay version of fried rice, usually stir-fried with Ikan Bilis (anchovies) and tomato sauce. Perhaps because of all the different types of fried rice we get to taste in Singapore, we are known as the ‘Fried Rice Paradise’?

Yummy Western Fried Rice - Dabaogram Version
This week, #dabaogram tried a new dimension of food plating with a floral touch. Greens like cucumbers and parsley were added to give it a refreshing look and feel . We reshaped the side dishes and positioned them like an arrow pointing upwards. Can you see it? Finally, we used some of the accompanying chilli sauce to add some vibrant colour to the dish. Viola! 📸
We would like to thank Yummy Western for preparing such delicious fried rice and western food. According to the owner, all dishes were marinated using a special curated sauce. This is an un-sponsored series in which we hope to raise awareness of our rich local hawker food culture and help local hawkers during this unprecedented period. Join us on this journey of rediscovery where we dabao and transform our local favourites into works of gastronomic art, one district at a time. Tag us in your post if you would try your own ‘dabaogram’ at home.
