【Yishun #2 - Huat Kee Kway Chap】
Did you know that Yishun was named after a pineapple 🍍 Pioneer Lim Nee Soon and the name was translated to Yishun in Mandarin during the nationwide Speak Mandarin Campaign era? Mr Lim Nee Soon was an industrialist who specialised in pineapple and rubber trading and the neighbouring precinct Chong Pang was named after his son! Ah … now you can relate ...🤔
This week, we are bringing you a Teochew dish featuring thick & broad sheets of rice noodles doused in a special dark and flavourful broth and served with an array of side dishes such as salted vegetables, braised bean curd, pork intestines and braised pork. That’s Kway Chap!
This dish may not be among the most common dishes seen at all hawker centres in Singapore but somehow you can always find a stall serving Kway Chap nearby.
Hidden among the clusters of HDB flats in Yishun, Huat Kee Kway Chap is where you can find a meal of traditional herbal soup filled with broad sheets of rice noodles and a platter of assorted ingredients of your choice. The silky ‘kway chap’ has this nostalgic taste in the bowl that you can't stop thinking about. For those of you who have never tried unique taste of pork intestines before, you should definitely check out @huatkeekwaychap.sg !

Huat Kee Kway Chap Daobaogram Version
So, what did #dabaogram do for this dish? First, we used the sauce to create a splash art on the plate, then re-shaped the braised ingredients, filled the pork intestines with salted vegetables and deep-fried the ‘kway’ to add that artsy structure. Viola!📸
We would like to thank Huat Kee Kway Chap for serving such authentic local delights. This is an un-sponsored series in which we hope to raise awareness of our rich local hawker food culture and help local hawkers during this unprecedented period. Join us on this journey of rediscovery where we dabao and transform our local favourites into works of gastronomic art, one district at a time.
